Sia’s New Video Tribute to Orlando Victims

On Sept. 5, 40-year-old “Chandelier” singer, Sia, released her new music video for “The Greatest.” The song is a tribute to the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting victims who were killed in June, 2016.

The six minute video begins with the hashtag #WeAreYourChildren displayed on a blank screen before switching to 13-year-old dancer, Maddie Ziegler. Ziegler, who has appeared in four different videos by Sia, symbolically wipes her face with the colors of the rainbow, indicating the rainbow flag of the LGBT community. The 49 dancers in the video are a representation of the 49 victims of the shooting.

The end of the video is the most heartbreaking. All 49 dancers drop to the floor, almost completely still. The interior of the club they were dancing in appears to have bullet holes in the walls. The video ends with Ziegler appearing, but this time crying over the still bodies of the dancers on the floor.

Grammy-Award-winning rapper Kendrick Lamar is featured on Sia’s track, “The Greatest,” but his lyrics were omitted from the video.

Matt Mosley, a dancer from the video, tweeted shortly after it was released: “Humbled to be a part of this video. Thank you @siathisisacting. 49 beautiful lives lost. This is for you. #WeAreYourChildren.”

The video was directed by Sia herself alongside Daniel Askill and Ryan Huffington, who also helped choreograph the dancing.

The song, including Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics, will be on Sia’s upcoming album, We Are Your Children. The album will be Sia’s eighth.
