Taylor Swift’s unsuccessful sassy side

On the night of the 2017 Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift introduced the world to new music and a new voice. She dropped her first single off of Reputation, “Look What You Made Me Do,” and, shortly after, she dropped another song called “Ready for It?” Swift’s sound has changed over the years from country sweetheart to pop superstar, but now she is unsuccessfully trying for a new title: Badass.

“Look What You Made Me Do” is an overproduced song, unsuccessfully attempting to copy other famous girl-boss icons like Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj. Possibly riding the coattails of Katy Perry’s “Swish Swish,” Swift’s lyrics depict her in control and showing everyone how amazing she thinks she is. She builds the song up in an entertaining verse only to reach a plateau. She produces an orgasmic sound, which, frankly, no one wants to hear from her, including some of her ex boyfriends, and then says “Look what you made me do” on repeat.

Taylor, I can’t help but ask, what did you do exactly? The beat is overproduced and her voice doesn’t even resemble that of previous songs.

The video is no better than the song. Swift starts her disaster as a zombie, which only makes sense considering she killed any possible hope her songwriter had left. She then goes on to lay in a diamond bathtub and dance in a way she must think is seductive, but rather makes one want to shield his or her eyes.

This monstrosity continues throughout the whole production and seemingly becomes worse. Before the final chorus, Swift talks on the phone with some unknown person asking if the old Taylor could come to the phone. Her response? She can’t because “she’s dead.”

Swift may be trying to make a new name for herself, but, by attempting to de-throne her old self, she seems pathetic. Yes, this song was made to be an attack on what Kayne West and the media have said about her, but, by denying her old self she comes off as a spoiled brat.

And just when the whole thing finally seems to be over, Swift adds an ending where all her old selves argue. Just what the world needed, more annoying Taylor Swifts. At least Taylor Swift bashes herself so everyone else does not have to.

“Ready for It?” is not as painful to listen to, but it is not pleasant. Acting like a modern-day Avril Lavigne knock-off, this new Taylor Swift just cannot find her place. The song is produced with grimy, underground sounding beats with her drooling over the lines. Again, she attempts to be sexual, and she scares everyone away in the process.

Speaking for everyone, we want the old Taylor Swift back. The overproduced country singles and even pop singles were easier to digest than her recent disasters.

Either write new songs that are not terrible or retire before you totally ruin your career, Taylor.
