Migos is back with their sophomore album, Culture, after a break from producing studio albums. Between their debut album Yung Rich Nation, there wasn’t much fanfare on the mixtapes No Label 2 and Y.R.N. 2. The tapes did not feel full with only a few hit-singles coming out of those tapes. Culture is the culmination of a full project for Migos. The album sounds like it is full of singles and free of any lull from B-sides.
The album has also set the precedent for chart topping hits like “Bad and Boujee,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 at number one. The single is the first ever number-one hit for Migos and Lil Uzi Vert. The second single, “T-Shirt,” also entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 37.
“Bad and Boujee” is one of the best singles off of the album. Offset and Quevo flow off of each other seamlessly. As for Lil Uzi Vert, he continues to fail the English language with his poor rapping ability in his feature on the song.
Even with the poor feature of mumble-rap, the song is still one of the strongest on Culture. The song also features some great production from Metro Boomin’ with a laid back drum beat that carries throughout the song. The single “Call Casting” carries a similar vibe in terms of its impact on the album.
Aside from DJ Khaled and Lil Uzi Vert, the features from Gucci Mane, 2 Chainz and Travis Scott are all great and provide added firepower to the album. The trio offer nothing new in terms of innovation, but there is nothing wrong with that. By sticking to what they know through their unique style and famous ad-libbing, Migos come out with a fun album. They didn’t set out to spin heads or set the world on fire, but they came out and put in hard work to create an enjoyable product.
